Apple Launches New iMacs!

Last night, the Apple Online Store went on a break and posted a sticky telling everyone they’d be back soon. Shortly after, the new iMacs were up and available! And just in time for the newly launched Starcraft II for Mac. Coincidence? We choose to think not! The new iMacs promise faster speeds, more power, and best of all, they start from only RM3899!

Here’s what Apple has to say about the new and improved iMac:

New Intel Core processors across the line.

All iMac models now include processors from the blazing-fast Intel Core series, featuring an advanced processor architecture that helps set new performance benchmarks for iMac. The 21.5-inch models and one 27-inch model come standard with a dual-core Intel Core i3 processor starting at 3.06GHz. For even more performance, choose the top-of-the-line 27-inch iMac with a quad-core Intel Core i5 at 2.8GHz or optional Intel Core i7 at 2.93GHz. Four cores make just about everything you do faster: managing your photos, editing HD video, even playing graphics-intensive 3D games. And since Mac OS X Snow Leopard is designed to take full advantage of Intel dual- and quad-core architectures, you get the fastest performance possible.

Faster graphics.

Every iMac includes powerful discrete graphics, meaning the graphics processor is separate from the CPU. So whether you’re an amateur filmmaker or an avid gamer, iMac gives you faster, smoother, crisper graphics no matter which model you choose. The 21.5-inch iMac offers fast graphics performance with either the ATI Radeon HD 4670 with 256MB of dedicated memory or the ATI Radeon HD 5670 with 512MB of memory. Which one is right for you? The greater the memory, the faster the performance for graphics-intensive applications such as games and video editors. When you step up to the 27-inch iMac, you can choose the ATI Radeon HD 5670 with 512MB of memory. Or enjoy amazing performance with the ATI Radeon HD 5750 with 1GB of GDDR5 memory. You’ll notice the speed boost every time you run your favourite 3D applications and games.

Also released is the Magic Trackpad, the first Multi-Touch trackpad designed to work with your iMac. StarCraft II for the Mac OS X in Malaysia!

It’s been a long wait since May 2007 when Blizzard officially announced the sequel to the mind-blowing, award-winning strategy title, Starcraft. But the time has come for gamers worldwide to rejoice! Why? StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty will be released for the Mac tomorrow! (27 July 2010)

The game, a military science fiction real-time strategy video game, will be split into three installments: The base game Wings of Liberty (available tomorrow) and two expansion packs, Heart of the Swarm and Legacy of the Void.

Starcraft II is designed to put a heavier focus on the multiplayer aspect of the game when compared to the original. There are overall improvements such as a new competitive ranking system designed to match players of equal skill levels, a replay function, and enhancements in Battle.net. Players can also expect highly improved in-game-cut-scenes and detailed space terrain.

And oh! Great news! The StarCraft II Southeast Asia/Australia/New Zealand version will soon have the option of accessing the North American Battle.net® servers.

If you can’t wait to get your hands on the game (we know we can’t), you can buy a digital copy by downloading it now. When sales of digital copies begin in Southeast Asia, gamers will be able to run the installer and activate the copy via their Battle.net account. We also heard from our reseller at Machines that there’ll some copies on sale from 2pm onwards for RM248. Better give them a call to enquire!

Day 3 of DiscoveryWeek 8 was an exciting one! We had the first session of Milk The Cow where our skillful winner walked away with an iPod touch and the first runner-up, an iPod nano! Remember, the Milk The Cow Contest is not over yet as there’s another session tomorrow! (And that means, more iPods to give away!) Also, the Hitz Cruisers dropped by once more to give out the 10 daily Woohoo! boxes at our Hitz Woohoo! hour.

So if you haven’t dropped by DiscoveryWeek 8 yet, make sure you do so tomorrow. It’s going to be an eventful Saturday with more contests, prizes, performances, and things for you to go ooh and ahh at. You really don’t want to miss it!

Ever been so bored out of your mind that you’ve tried tossing crumpled pieces of paper into the trash can? And to your surprise, you find that you’re actually good at it? Well, if you have, we’ve got good news! Machines, the host of DiscoveryWeek8 will be running a Paper Toss Challenge at 12:30pm on Thursday, 22 July 2010! The top tosser wins a prize!

But no, we won’t be tossing real paper into actual metal cans. Instead, contestants will be competing by playing the Paper Toss game created by Backflip Studios for the iPhone and iPod!

The Paper Toss game is a realistic, simple game that’s also surprisingly satisfying and addictive. The game features gorgeous graphics and sounds and offers 5 levels of varied difficulty. You can even up the challenge by turning on a fan at varied speeds to impact the paper flight. And here’s our favourite part of the game. You actually receive verbal abuse from angry co-workers.

Always dreamed about developing your own gaming app for the iPhone and iPod? Well, turn your dreams into a reality! Hear from the guys at Terato Tech as they share how they developed Qalvinius, a new home-grown, all-Malaysian (Yeah! Malaysia Boleh!) RPG game.

They’ll be previewing the game and sharing their experiences on how the game came to be. So if you want to learn more about game development for the iOS, this is the talk for you!

Here’s a little of what they have to say about Qalvinius:

Qalvinius started out as an idea, for a game that any casual gamers can dive in and play. The idea was to have an interactive world where there are various in-game characters players can interact with, and alongside immerse the players in a storyline that will keep them hooked to the game. As it stands right now, Qalvinius is probably the most immersive 2D side scrolling RPG game a player can ever experience.

Starting from the town where the player first entered, the player will be able to roam around towns and lands to meet characters that will provide the player with more details about the monster that lurks around the island. Aside from that, players can also take some time off monster slaying by going to various merchants that allows the player to gain virtual prizes in the form of mini games.

Development of Qalvinius is separated into two parts, story development and engine development. Qalvinius itself is based on an in-house built game engine named “prototype”, which itself provides the framework that allows story editors to freely implement their story as it is written on paper. It’s flexibility frees the programmers from the burden of rigidly programming the game to fit the story, and provides editors the tools they need to form a well designed game. Therefore, we are extremely proud of Qalvinius, both as a full featured game and a decent game engine by itself.

We believe that people will find Qalvinius a fun and enjoying experience, as it features a light hearted story combined with monsters slaying action.
